Design Wall Monday - March 26, 2018

Thank you to all who encouraged me this week!  Your "Go Judy Go" cheered me on to the finish line!.  Here is the Valentine Quilt, for the last time, on my design wall, all in one piece:

The center heart has a little message in the middle, can you see it?

Four little initials, signifying "Judy Hansen loves Lloyd Hansen".  Here's a closeup on the one inch square with the embroidery:

For those (like me) who count things, there are 3,807 one inch squares in the quilt.  I could have cut larger squares where the same color red was next to another square, but it was actually easier to make all the squares the same size, and not have to think about what size square went where.  The quilt is 47 inches long and 81 inches wide.

There are two or three quilts in progress that could go up on the design wall, and it will probably be my Jane Stickle replica quilt.  I've been working on it forever, and it's time to finish it.  I will post about it next week.

But enough about my design wall, what about yours?  Let's see what you have been working on!

Design Wall link-up instructions are the same each week.  Please link back to this particular post somewhere within your post.  I appreciate it so much when you do.

Design Wall Monday - March 19, 2018

IS IT SPRING YET?

Can someone PLEASE motivate me to get my Valentine Quilt final seams finished?  Where is my mojo?  If all of you would chant in unison...."Go Judy! Go Judy! Go Judy!"  in your best cheerleader voices, maybe it would help.

I have only 18 more seams to go, 10 short ones and 8 longer ones.  I thought I was taking baby steps to get this project done, but my baby steps have turned into very slow snail steps.

New goal is to complete two small seams or one large seam each day this week.  Meanwhile, I've been playing with triangles of scraps.  Here are two pictures to show my little tiny progress this week in the sewing room.  I took all the triangle shaped scraps, put them together with either plain fabric, or a contrasting scrap, and took them to the sewing machine.  I have only two stacks yet to sew.

Then I trimmed the triangles into the biggest size they could be.   Here's a picture of some 1.5 by 1.5 sized ones, showing my little ruler and little rotary cutter.  I love this little ruler.

What is on your design wall?  I hope you have bigger bits to show me this week.

Design Wall Monday - March 12, 2018

This week, I worked on my stash.   I finished cutting up and sorting a paper grocery sized bag of scraps that were in no order at all.  Most of organization in general consists of sorting "like things together".  The scraps are now sorted into shoe boxes of squares.  Most of them are either 2.5 x 2.5 or 1.5 x 1.5, both are sizes I use often for small quilts.

Other new "alike groups" were triangles and small strips - strips set aside for a log cabin quilt, and triangles to sew together as leaders and enders for future half square triangles.

Here are pictures of the boxes of my "parts factory" for small quilts:

 2.5 in. x 2.5 in. squares.....2 in. x 2 in. squares.....1.5 in. x 1.5 in. squares

1 3/4 in. x 1 3/4 in. squares.......1 1/4 in. x 1 1/4 in.........1 in. x 1 in. squares

We were at the cabin this weekend, and the tundra swans were coming through Michigan on their migration back to Alaska from the Chesapeake Bay on the east coast.  They are beautiful, and the sound of their bugling calls during the night is like nothing else.  I marvel at their sounds, their beauty, and that they migrate so far.  They spent the weekend "bottoms up" in front of our place, feeding on the vegetation in the lake.  There were several Canada geese there also, but they aren't as noisy.

What have you been working on this week?

There are two more Mondays in March after today, and I am determined to have something new on my design wall by April. Meanwhile, the Valentine Quilt is still there for now.

Design Wall Monday - March 5, 2018

We just got back from the Big 10 Basketball Tournament which was held in Madison Square Gardens.  We've seen five days of basketball, and had a great time.  I haven't had much time to quilt this week, but am looking forward to seeing what is on your design wall.

Since I've not worked on anything worth taking a picture of this week, I'll show you a picture of my doll quilts that were in the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show in Newport News, VA.  The show just ended, and I wasn't able to be there to see them in person, so a kind friend sent me this picture.  They were part of The Churn Dashers Exhibit, quilts made by a group of women who make reproductions of civil war era quilts.

What's on your design wall today?

Can't wait to see what you will be showing me today!  I'm anxious to get back to my sewing machine and get to work (fun).
