Design Wall Monday - September 18, 2017

My sister is out of the hospital, and I am so glad. Your prayers are appreciated and were heard. She is feeling much better.

This week I've been working on finishing some quilts that were unfinished for quite a while.  I blogged before (Here) about a mystery quilt that I had quite a few parts for, and then decided to change directions and not finish the mystery quilt.   It turned out that I will have four quilts from the parts of one mystery quilt unfinished.  All's well that ends well.

First quilt, just bound this week:

I used the plaid on bias for the binding as I like it to look a little different than the plaid it is next to, and this quilt will be donated to the Lighthouse Pregnancy Care Center, Manistee, MI,  for a raffle they have coming soon.  I hope it will have a good home and be loved by someone.

A picture of the quilt top right after I pieced it together, shown on a king sized bed:

Closeup of one of the blocks:

Quilt two and three are twin quilts, that I use at the cabin for picnics cloths.  I removed the black part of the four patch and replaced it with another yellow square, and added red and white checked fabric all around.  They are quilted with a leaf pattern that I like a lot.  The picture is of just one, but there are two, just alike.

Here are two clues to the mystery quilt; and you can tell which parts went into each of my quilts.

This third clue below will be the subject of my next blog post, as the quilt is at the quilters right now, getting quilted.  I took out the black square and made the green and white parts into an Irish Chain quilt, and my quilter, Joyce Brenner, is quilting the MSU "Sparty" logo on the blank white parts.  I can't wait to show it to you next week.

What's on your design wall?  I hope you are making progress on your quilts too.

  1. What a great way to make use of those blocks. Sounds like you are getting 4 quilts for the work done for one. I love the plaid in that first quilt. Very dramatic.

  3. well it took me a minute to recognize the quilt pieces. What a great result from the mystery. I really likes the bias binding idea.

  4. That is a beautiful pattern, Judy. For a minute, it looked like pineapples, but then I realized it is even prettier and so much easier. Love the plaid and you have used it to enhance the quilt!!!

  5. Wow! Your first finish is beautiful! I just love the pinks with the blacks and the plaid is perfect! I don't know what the mystery quilt would have looked like, but it could not have been prettier then this finish.

  6. I love what you did with your mystery. So often when the "reveal" isn't to our liking, the project is abandoned. You did a beautiful job re-purposing the parts to make quilts you can use.

  7. I recognized those as Grand Illusion units even before I scrolled down to see the hints from the pattern. My version of GI didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped (I ended up selling the flimsy). I think the units are terrific in the blocks and quilt you made. And the red/white "picnic" quilt is retro-colorful.

  8. Am also doing Kevin the Quilters Mystery Quilt and have participated in Bonnie Hunter's past ones. I so enjoy your blog. I really like how you use checked material in your quilts. A light bulb went off and I realized that Kevin's quilt could also have checks used. Am out of state visiting my sister now but when I get home I plan on checking my stash to finish up the quilt and will definitely go for plaid or check material! Thanks for sharing!
