Design Wall Monday - August 20, 2018

This week I am working on a doll quilt using cheddar nine patches.  I am looking into four different layouts.  What do you think?

Option 1:

Use a striped fabric to create a fussy cut sashing and add fussy cut cornerstones. (cornerstones to be determined)

Option 2:

Use a cheddar print for plain squares and set the quilt on point.

Option 3:

Use white as sashing or as alternate squares for a simpler look.

Option 4:

More simple, as three is, but on point.

Let me know what you think - or if you think of any other possibilities. Thanks!

Today is Design Wall Monday, and I am looking forward to seeing what you have on your design wall.  The rules are simple - please link back to this particular blog post somewhere within your blog post.  The coffee is brewing and I am going to sit out on the deck with a cup of coffee, while looking at your creations this morning.

Hubby is out golfing this morning, and I have to brag about him - yesterday he won the Manistee National Senior Golf Championship.  He loves to golf as much as I love to quilt!

Penny Lane is 40 pounds!  We can't believe it, but it is so.  She loves to chew on sticks, and up here at the cabin, there are plenty of sticks in the yard.  She sat in the hammock with me yesterday afternoon and chewed on sticks for about half an hour.  Life is good!

  1. I like option #1. The stripe really works with those blocks and that setting. Happy stitching this week.

  2. I agree #1 makes the blocks stand out.

  3. I like option #4 and would use a grey fabric to pop up the orange.
    I love on point settings!

  4. I like options #1, too, with option #2 a close second. It's amazing how a fabric can really change the whole look of a design.

  5. Definitely put them on point, always so much more interesting. I like the background in option 1 best.

  6. I like the cheddar fabric in option two but it washes out the blocks. Maybe sashing first? Also like the print in option one. How does that one look like on point? The cream is also a good choice for a nice simple looking quilt. Can't go wrong with any of the choices!

  7. The stripe gets my vote. So much more interesting than a plainer background.

  8. #4 really shows all of the work you did on the 9-patches, and the diagonal set adds additional interest. Could use the other two fabrics for border and binding.

  9. Option 1 and 2 are my favorites. I am tending more to option 2.

  10. for dolly size #2 is a softer look. For full size I'd go for #2, bang for the buck!

We are leaving Wednesday for a two month-ish sail with our 5th wheel. Rob is running back and forth behind me packing the freezer. Heaven forbid we don't have a good Costco beef roast along the way. Furthest destination is Paducah for the fall show.

  11. I'm a sucker for on point and for cheddar so I would choose option 2. They are all great. Maybe you need more blocks - wink. Congratulations to your husband. it's nice that we all have our passions!

  12. I like the second and fourth options the best. But all of them would certainly work. I really love an "on point" layout for blocks.

  13. I like 2 & 4. I'm also a sucker for on point, 9 patches and cheddar. Good luck with your decision. Can't wait to see what you decide.

  14. I like option 4 best, but they're all so pretty!

  15. Love the stripe in #1. I’d turn the stripe so it runs vertical on the top and bottom of the 9p, and horizontal on the sides, then use a cornerstone.

  16. I vote for option 1 - love the sashing fabric.

  17. I love on point setting. And, I love the background fabric I. Option #1. I think I’d use that for alternate blocks with the nine patches. It will be adorable!

  18. How complex do you want to get? I envision adding coordinating or contrasting flying geese -- either pointing outward to make Sawtooth Stars or point inward to make a King's Crown. Otherwise, I'd go for on-point with the stripe.

  19. I adore the "background" fabric in option 1 - however you decide to utilize it. It screams to me of small and dainty. I love the addition of the stripe. Saying all that, I personally do not think that you can lose with any choice.

I want to take a minute to thank you for taking time to send me an email about Penny Lane. I appreciate your caveats about having a Lab and the energy level for having a service dog. I don't just have PTSD, I also have fibromyalgia and as with most maladies it effects patients in varying degrees and ways. Besides some of the normal ailments, I tend to have noticeable arm strength reduction. Also, when I have spent my energy reserve, it is depleted and I collapse into my recliner. Any project is left as is. Any energy then is absolutely spent on necessary tasks. I never know when that threshold is coming. So, I need a very understanding pet. So, you are absolutely astute and spot on with your remarks and they are very appreciated. On the other hand, it may help me to have "someone else" to tend to help me rise to that level.

Again, thanks for everything and you will have an awesome quilt, no matter what.
    Susan

  20. Its looking like there's no one favorite, Carla.
    Good luck making your choice!

(I'm favoring the striped sashing. It gives it an"old" look.)

  21. I like your option #4. How about using the #1 fabric for a border? Maybe even an inner border, with a wider border of something else? That just says "fussy cut border" to me!

  22. I like the last option on point, but use shirting's as the alternate fabrics, scrappy ones

  23. My son says use blue as your background and it could be a bronco quilt! Ha ha - I like the cream/lighter background - but.... what do you like best?
