Design Wall Monday - May 18, 2020

Good morning quilters!  I had a fairly non-productive week and hit a “coronavirus self-distancing slump” .  I am over it now, and have started sewing again.  The May Day embroidered baskets are back out, and I’m working on two.  The one I just started has some of my favorite flowers in it - lilacs.  Do they grow where you live?  Are they in bloom now?  For me, yes and no.  Yes, They grow in almost every farmhouse yard in Michigan....big bushes full of their sweet blossoms.  No, they are not in bloom yet.  I am trying to use different purples as I stitch, just to amuse myself.

The second basket has blue bell shaped flowers.  Blue flax, possibly.  I am almost finished with this one.

What are you doing to keep yourself in a good mood during these unusual times?  One song that lifts my spirits is found on youtube.   (Here)  Several United Kingdom church choir members are singing together, though separated.  I like to play it to start my day, and am thankful for their efforts to cheer everyone.

Please link up with a picture of what you are working on, and also comment here on what you are doing to keep yourself in good spirits.  I appreciate all of you so much.  I ask that you provide a link back to this particular blog post from somewhere within your post.  Thanks!

  1. Both embroidery blocks are beautiful. Glad you were able to get out of your slump. I hit one as well, but I think it was linked to getting back to the office. It's a lot more stressful working now, especially since so many people don't want to practice social distancing or wear a mask now that they've opened business back up. Hope this week is much better for you.

  2. I love the embroidery blocks, both are beautiful! Our lilac bush is blooming now but there aren't a lot of blooms. The freeze we had 2 weeks ago hurt a lot of the spring perennials. I didn't think to cover them. Enjoy your lilacs when they bloom!

  3. it is hard to always stay in a good mood while this national health crisis is in play but I try to stay positive and busy both in the sewing room and in my yard.

  4. Your embroidery blocks are all so pretty! A good mood has been hard to come by for me lately. But the sun is finally shining this morning and that helps a lot. Plus I have an afternoon coffee date with friends I haven't seen in person for 9 weeks. We are meeting outside on a patio and bringing our own coffee. The other 3 ladies all have serious underlying health concerns that have kept them at home to be safe. But we feel that we can meet today with some social distancing precautions.

  5. I had a slump too--mostly emotional though...
Such pretty blocks. I don't think lilacs grow here naturally, too hot and dry in SoCal. Glad you've found something that lifts your spirits. It's good to be safe and healthy, and I feel sorry for those who don't have partners or family in the same household to share this isolation. Grateful for the internet and all the friendly places online!

  6. Using different shades of purple will play in your favor adding depth, cant wait to see that. Glad you are out of your slump. Even though the only thing that has changed for me is grocery shopping every 2 weeks instead of weekly I know I am getting bored. I tackled the catch all room this weekend, had to come back to work to get some rest.

  7. Your embroidered baskets are looking lovely, Judy! I've been back and forth with those bursts of creative energy alternating with slumps as well. I think it's the nature of the Quarantine Beast! Some days it's just easier to get going than others.

  11. Hi Judy, I love lilacs - they are not out in Ottawa yet although it shouldn't be too long. It's now tulip time, even if there is no festival this year. Your blocks are lovely and I'm glad that the slump is over. I'm doing a lot more hand stitching since it's a no brainer which is what I need right now. Still lots of projects piled up to work on, whenever my brain decides to function properly. Take care of yourself.

  12. Love your embroidery; I actually found my very old UFO embroidery on the weekend, so I may just get back to it, since seeing so much of it around of late. Sewing, especially just for the joy of creating, always helps me get over a bit of a slump. Reading too. And we've discovered a lovely show, Escape to the Country, that we enjoy watching while we eat supper!

  13. The lilac basket is going to be my favoite! My lilacs have been in full bloom for about a week. I love the scent but wish they stayed in bloom longer.

  14. Here in eastern Oregon State, where it is DRY we have a small one that blooms white. We've been here since fall of 2013 and it does not seem to grow much due to it's being at the edge of anything that may get watered. (I've kind of ignored it I guess.) Love your embroidery!
