Love Entwined.......The Approaching Train!

It is interesting to watch as we (me included) jump on the train whenever something new hits the quilt blogs.  I saw a BOM being offered for free on a blog (Esther Aliu explains her project here) and it looked interesting, so I read the instructions on the blog, and requested approval to join the yahoo group where the monthly instructions would be issued.

While waiting for approval to be part of the group, I kept hearing more and more about it on the internet, from lots of different sources.  When I was finally accepted as part of the group on Yahoo Groups, I looked at the activity measures that tell how active the group is.  This group had 250 new members that week!  Posts per month went from 169 in May to 1302 so far in June!  And June isn't over yet. There are a lot of people excited about making this quilt!

What is it, and how did this all start?  Well the quilt is a going to be a replica of a 1790 medallion quilt, shown in a black and white picture in an old book, first published in 1958 in England.  "Patchwork" by Averil Colby has a picture (Plate 104) on Page 91.  Here's a picture from Esther Aliu's blog of the page in the book:

Esther Aliu is a textile artist who usually designs her own quilts, but is taking on the project of reproducing this vintage quilt.  She says on her blog:
Would you like to make this quilt?  I have created Love Entwined: 1790 Marriage Coverlet to be released as a free 18 month historic BOM.  Everyone is welcome to make it, including groups.  The pattern will be available for free (limited to the block each month) download via the Esther Aliu Yahoo BOM Group only, after launching.  Membership is, and always will be, free.  Why not join us today?

Why am I making it?  Well, I love old quilts, I am starting the Jubliee Year of my marriage, a medallion quilt is on my bucket-list, the quilt name is enchanting - Love Entwined, "Free" always has me at hello, I love to start new projects,.........how can I saw no?  I am jumping on board!

Are you ready for an adventure?

I have a copy of Averil Colby's book Patchwork available to give to someone who is making the quilt.  Please reply to this post and tell me if you are making it, and if so, what colors you are planning for your version of Love Entwined.  I will draw a name from the replies to this post, and will mail out the book after the July 4th holiday.   I will keep the reply opportunities open through June 30th.

Esther Aliu has a Wednesday link up on her blog called WOW, (Work-in-progress On Wednesdays) and I am linking today.  Link to Love Entwined

Here's my work in progress - the little flag quilt is almost finished.  It measures 13 x 16 right now, before the binding is added.

What adventures are your embarking on today?

  3. I am one of many that have been on Esther's yahoo group for along time. This quilt looks very interesting and I'm keen to have a go with this one. I want to just use all pretty colours and fabrics, using what I have and adding others I like as I go. Averil's book looks very interesting.

  4. Collecting my ticket for this train too, full of excited passengers lol. I have no idea on firm colours for this wonderful quilt but would like to stay with as far as possible, original colours. Stash shopping will be first stop though as I am retired now and need to watch the pennies. Loved visiting your blog.

  5. I'm looking forward to it but haven't looked at fabric choices yet - I'm waiting to see what the requirements will be.

  6. Hi Judy
I'd be thrilled if I won this book. I'm hoping to make the quilt out of modern brights but I haven't chosen fabrics yet as I need to see how much fabric we require.
Thanks for the opportunity to win this special book.

  7. Awesome! I love her work, Esther is a master in her field of art! I look forward to making this quilt and right now I envision making a blue and white quilt. However, that could change as I begin to collect Dutch fabrics. Information from group members has inspired me to consider different color pallettes that were previously unknown to me.(Dutch chintz) This has been an exciting month of reading! I would love the book! I do love Medallion patterns! So excited to start!

  8. I'm another passenger on this train! I've pulled several fabrics that I hope will work! The messages have been coming fast and furious, haven't they?
I think Esther Aliu is a master fiber artist, and the fact that she is willing to share her project with us is such a gracious thing to do.
Thanks for doing this giveaway, the book is a treasure.

  9. I am excited to participate in this BOM from Esther. I haven't done any of her quilts before, I just recently found out about her blog - I'm one of the 250 new members.

I haven't decided on fabric yet but the latest comments about Japanese taupes has me thinking. I have been collecting them recently and would have a good start if I decide to go that way.

Can't wait for Friday to see the first installment! And thank you for this chance to own the book!

  10. Welcome to Esther's group. Applique for me is difficult so I have only finished one of Esther's quilts and have another half finished. I am planning on trying to do this next one: I'm sure this book would be a great inspiration.

  14. I am waiting to see the actual pattern before I select patterns. I like to appliqué and have been following Esther's blog for years

  15. I'm so impressed with your new project, but I know my limitations-- timewise, that is. I'm just saying, I'm not entering for the giveaway. It needs to go to someone who will really MAKE the quilt!

Meanwhile, I love the flags more than ever!

  16. I am so excited about this quilt! Like others, I want to study the full picture but am leaning toward oakshott. The colors are beautiful in their series and look silky--and fantastic to handle. This book would be a treasure. I just finished my Salindra Rupp historical quilt and having pictures of the original served as a critical reference in the whole experience. Thanks for sharing this offering! I love applique and a challenge!

  17. This quilt is very intriguing and would love to the book as a guild.
I've been following Esther's blog for a few years now. I'm kind of quiet on the board reader as I'm fairly new to quilting (5 years) I lost my job and decided heck...I'll quilt instead ; )
I'm pretty good at needle turn but usure at this time if I will be doing needle turn or another method. I'm sitting on the fence with color schemes and don't really have the stash to draw from so I'm open to suggestions at this point. Is so nice of you to offer this book...I do hope I win..ps...love your blog!

  18. I'm going to try and make this quilt. From what I can see, it looks lovely. I'm still not sure about what colors. I don't have a huge stash that plays well together so will have to make do. Thanks

  19. Yes, definitely going to be making this! So grateful to Esther. I will be using a cream or tan background. Will have to wait to see the pattern to figure out the patch colors. I love antique quilts and enjoy reading books on this subject.

  20. Hi Judy: I am certainly planning to make Love Entwined. I think I'll use my hand dyed fabrics for this quilt in the same colours as Esther has coloured on the WIP. I love the idea of making it in lighter tones, something I rarely do. I'm a huge fan of quilt history and am a member of The Alberta Quilt Study Project, a new organization devoted to quilt history. A copy of this book would be warmly welcomed and shared with mynquilt history buffs. Annette

  21. Hi Judy,
While I have not decided on the colours, I do have the background. It is a solid off white/beige. I figured that this would be a wonderful 'ground' to whatever colours I use. I don't think I will change my mind, but if I do, it would be a light gray background.
Thank you for the chance to win the book.

  22. I will be attempting this quilt. I haven't done a lot of applique but will try. Haven't decided yet exactly what colors I will use but love reproduction fabric (civil war) even though this quilt pre-dates the civil war. Will have to look through some fabric books relating to that period and see what the 1790's fabric looked like. Love history so this will be an adventure.

  23. I was originally thinking shades of pink and rose but I am now leaning toward brights. It is a big decision! lol

  24. I'm not making the quilt (what an ambitious undertaking, though), but I just had to say I love the little flag quilt!

  25. I signed up for this quilt probably two or three weeks ago. I want to see a couple of the blocks before I decide on fabrics, though. It's a hard choice but an important one and I want the quilt to be beautiful when it's finished. I LOVE applique!

  26. Hi Judy, thanks to your generous offer to give-away the book "Patchwork", I found your blog!
Ofcourse I would loce to take a chance at winning this great book. And I also entered Esther's Yahoo-group to join the Love Entwined-BOM.
It is such a great patern; and it will be such a challenge.
I haven't decided on what specific fabrics; because I would love to see what colours Esther chose. Besides I have a lot of scraps; ofcourse there will be some fabrics I will buy...
But because the quilt is called Love Entwined; I probably will go for a romantic fabric-choice!
So excited!!!! Almost cann't wait for Friday to come...
We all will have so much fun!!
Thanks again for your love give-away!!!!
    Greetings from the Netherlands,

  27. Judy, I am so excited to start working on this quilt too. It's like pins and needles waiting to see what Esther will do. I haven't decided what materials I will use. All of my stash is packed in a locker over 100 miles away right now. Darn, I guess that means I have to go shopping.

  28. Hi Judy, don't you love the excitement? I am so looking forward to the first release on Friday. I have been pulling fabrics and will probably do jewel tone reds. greens. blues, and gold on cream background. I have been a member of Esther's group for awhile and have never seen this much activity. Thanks for the offer for the book. It would be well appreciated here. I am looking forward to sharing the challenge with everyone... Sue in mid Michigan

  30. Hi Judy, I am a part of Esther's Yahoo Group and I am planning on making Love Entwined. I'm mainly a lurker, but would really like to get a copy of Averil's Patchwork and see a copy of the original quilt. Thanks for the giveway.

  31. Hi Judy,
What a wonderfull give-away! Yes my mom and me are going to make the LE from Esther and I would love to see the picture in te book.
Red and white fabrics is what I am thinking of or the Japanese fabrics with the powdered colors maybe.... So Excited, can't really make up my mind until the pattern is released.
I don't know what my mom will choose, she is wise and waits for Friday.
Good luck to all choosing fabrics and see you all online sharing our progress. I just know it is going to be great big fun and we probably need each others encouragements and advise too.

  33. ooh. i have found another lover of small quilts! They are delicious, aren't they? They really spice up a wall. However, I will be joining this quilt journey with others to make a larger quilt designed and drafted by Esther. Georgian colours do not excite me, so am considering several options: repro colours of provencal fabrics or possibly a taupe base with mustards and highlighted with some other colours. WHat to do? Make two, you say?? Hmmmmm....

  34. Thank you for the chance to win this book! It would be used well in our bee. :)
This year there will no time for me to start this beauty, but maybe in 2014. Most of my fabrics are very bright, but I love the Japanese fabrics too. Anyway, this quilt will look gorgeous in any colorway. ;)

  35. Hi Judy, what a great give-away!!
I'm looking forward to the release of this BOM, it is so great Esther made the pattern.
What colours you are asking, well first I want to see the pattern and then, I pick all my fabric out of the drawers,... I think I will be nuts at the end of the day, in a pleasent way that's for sure,...
    But I love it,...
    ;o)

  36. Hi Judy! How generous of you to share your treasure and your blog is beautiful. I am considering making the quilt in typical Baltimore Album fashion, red and green as the main fabrics. I am crazy for the album quilts and I would really enjoy putting my own twist on it. Thank you so much for your generous giveaway oportunity. Kathy Dunigan

  40. I want to make this quilt, but since I'm a beginner at this, I think making the center might be enough for me, like Esther suggested. For the colors I am still torn beween blue and cream or red white and blue, since that is what I have around. This book must be a real classic so thank you for this opportunity to win.

  41. So far I've ordered white Essex Linen for the background. The rest of the fabrics will be from my stash..still thinking about the color scheme.
