While waiting for approval to be part of the group, I kept hearing more and more about it on the internet, from lots of different sources. When I was finally accepted as part of the group on Yahoo Groups, I looked at the activity measures that tell how active the group is. This group had 250 new members that week! Posts per month went from 169 in May to 1302 so far in June! And June isn't over yet. There are a lot of people excited about making this quilt!
What is it, and how did this all start? Well the quilt is a going to be a replica of a 1790 medallion quilt, shown in a black and white picture in an old book, first published in 1958 in England. "Patchwork" by Averil Colby has a picture (Plate 104) on Page 91. Here's a picture from Esther Aliu's blog of the page in the book:
Esther Aliu is a textile artist who usually designs her own quilts, but is taking on the project of reproducing this vintage quilt. She says on her blog:
Would you like to make this quilt? I have created Love Entwined: 1790 Marriage Coverlet to be released as a free 18 month historic BOM. Everyone is welcome to make it, including groups. Why am I making it? Well, I love old quilts, I am starting the Jubliee Year of my marriage, a medallion quilt is on my bucket-list, the quilt name is enchanting - Love Entwined, "Free" always has me at hello, I love to start new projects,.........how can I saw no? I am jumping on board!

Please reply to this post and tell me if you are making it, and if so, what colors you are planning for your version of Love Entwined. ReplyDeleteI am one of many that have been on Esther's yahoo group for along time. This quilt looks very interesting and I'm keen to have a go with this one. I want to just use all pretty colours and fabrics, using what I have and adding others I like as I go. Averil's book looks very interesting.

I have no idea on firm colours for this wonderful quilt but would like to stay with as far as possible, original colours. Stash shopping will be first stop though as I am retired now and need to watch the pennies. Loved visiting your blog.

Awesome! I love her work, Esther is a master in her field of art! I look forward to making this quilt and right now I envision making a blue and white quilt. However, that could change as I begin to collect Dutch fabrics. Information from group members has inspired me to consider different color pallettes that were previously unknown to me.(Dutch chintz) This has been an exciting month of reading! I would love the book! I do love Medallion patterns! So excited to start!

Welcome to Esther's group. Applique for me is difficult so I have only finished one of Esther's quilts and have another half finished. I am planning on trying to do this next one: I'm sure this book would be a great inspiration.

I am so excited about this quilt! Like others, I want to study the full picture but am leaning toward oakshott. The colors are beautiful in their series and look silky--and fantastic to handle. This book would be a treasure. I just finished my Salindra Rupp historical quilt and having pictures of the original served as a critical reference in the whole experience. ReplyDeleteI've been following Esther's blog for a few years now. I'm kind of quiet on the board reader as I'm fairly new to quilting (5 years) I lost my job and decided heck...I'll quilt instead ; )
I'm pretty good at needle turn but usure at this time if I will be doing needle turn or another method. I'm sitting on the fence with color schemes and don't really have the stash to draw from so I'm open to suggestions at this point. Is so nice of you to offer this book...I do hope I win..ps...love your blog!
I'm going to try and make this quilt. From what I can see, it looks lovely. I'm still not sure about what colors. I don't have a huge stash that plays well together so will have to make do. Thanks

ReplyDeleteHi Judy: I am certainly planning to make Love Entwined. I think I'll use my hand dyed fabrics for this quilt in the same colours as Esther has coloured on the WIP. I love the idea of making it in lighter tones, something I rarely do. I'm a huge fan of quilt history and am a member of The Alberta Quilt Study Project, a new organization devoted to quilt history. A copy of this book would be warmly welcomed and shared with mynquilt history buffs. Annette

ReplyDeleteWhile I have not decided on the colours, I do have the background. It is a solid off white/beige. I figured that this would be a wonderful 'ground' to whatever colours I use. I don't think I will change my mind, but if I do, it would be a light gray background.

I will be attempting this quilt. I haven't done a lot of applique but will try. Haven't decided yet exactly what colors I will use but love reproduction fabric (civil war) even though this quilt pre-dates the civil war. Will have to look through some fabric books relating to that period and see what the 1790's fabric looked like. Love history so this will be an adventure.

ReplyDeleteI signed up for this quilt probably two or three weeks ago. I want to see a couple of the blocks before I decide on fabrics, though. It's a hard choice but an important one and I want the quilt to be beautiful when it's finished. I LOVE applique!

Judy, I am so excited to start working on this quilt too. It's like pins and needles waiting to see what Esther will do. I haven't decided what materials I will use. All of my stash is packed in a locker over 100 miles away right now. Darn, I guess that means I have to go shopping.

Red and white fabrics is what I am thinking of or the Japanese fabrics with the powdered colors maybe.... So Excited, can't really make up my mind until the pattern is released.

ooh. i have found another lover of small quilts! They are delicious, aren't they? They really spice up a wall. However, I will be joining this quilt journey with others to make a larger quilt designed and drafted by Esther. Georgian colours do not excite me, so am considering several options: repro colours of provencal fabrics or possibly a taupe base with mustards and highlighted with some other colours. WHat to do? Make two, you say?? Hmmmmm....

ReplyDeleteThis year there will no time for me to start this beauty, but maybe in 2014. Most of my fabrics are very bright, but I love the Japanese fabrics too. Anyway, this quilt will look gorgeous in any colorway. ;)

ReplyDeleteI want to make this quilt, but since I'm a beginner at this, I think making the center might be enough for me, like Esther suggested. For the colors I am still torn beween blue and cream or red white and blue, since that is what I have around. This book must be a real classic so thank you for this opportunity to win.
