Design Wall Monday - October 6, 2025

Good Morning Quilters!

Well, I’m home from vacation……but not very productive yet.  As I get older, I find my old body requires more maintenance.  This last Thursday, I had fatty tissue removed from my upper eyelids (so my eyeballs can see better).  Everything went successfully, but I am puffy and black and blue while I heal.  So now that I’ve had cataracts taken off, and the upper eyelids tightened up, I think I’m good to go in the eye department for a while.  

But while all of that necessary maintenance is great, I haven’t sewed all week.  So today, I will post one of my favorite fall quilts.  It is named “Third Weekend in October”.  The pattern is by Ruth Powers and looks harder than it really is.   I made it while I lived in Williamsburg, VA.

This quilt was my first attempt at free motion quilting, and it was fun to make “veins” in the leaves.   One leaf with quilting closeup:

Hopefully, next week I will be able to talk about a current quilt, or at least have pictures of current quilt blocks to show you.

Design Wall Monday - October 23, 2023

 Good Morning Quilters!

This past weekend was the third weekend in October, which makes me want to show you one of my favorite quilts.  “Third Weekend in October” is a pattern by Ruth Powers and is available from her website for $8.50.  (Here)

It’s 85 x 110 inches, and is paper pieced, like a large but easy puzzle.  Since I have given it to our Grandson Hunter, here is a current picture of him with the quilt, at his apartment.  He is my favorite Grandson…..(they all are!)

And here are two pictures taken this week of the beautiful leaves on display in our yard.  The quilt is aptly named!

Design Wall Monday - October 17, 2022

 Good Morning Quilters!  I am in Virginia this morning to meet with The Churn Dashers of Tidewater Virginia.  Unfortunately, it is our last meeting, as we have decided to disband.  We are all getting older, and feel this is best.  There is a time for everything, and as we get older, we realize there is a time to let some things go.

But, since I am now in Virginia, and not at home, I wrote this post Saturday before I left.

And when it's the Third Weekend in October, I must talk about this quilt again.  It was a lot of fun to make, and it now resides with my Grandson Hunter.

I blogged about quilting it  (Here)  and again (Here) when I repaired a hole that his dog chewed through it.

Design Wall Monday - October 19, 2020

 “The Third Weekend in October” is the name of one of my favorite quilts.  I blogged about making it (Here) 

If you would like to make this quilt, please check at the artist’s website for info.  (Here). The artist is Ruth Powers.  I think it is named so well, as this is the view out my bedroom window in Grand Rapids this week, in the third week of October.

I gave this quilt to my favorite grandson Hunter.  (please understand that all eight of my grandchildren are my favorites - each in their own way).  At Hunter’s home, his sweet old golden retriever, Charlie, liked this quilt so much that he ate a little part of it!  Three holes all the way through.   Charlie has recently passed on, but I like to think that a little of my quilt will always be comforting him.  This past week I’ve been repairing the quilt.  The pictures below are of the process of fixing these holes in the middle of the quilt.  Charlie chewed all the holes in just one leaf......good boy!

I found some yellow fabric that closely matched the leaf. 

Pinned it down over the damaged part. 

Appliquéd it down.

Re-quilted the veins in the leaf. 

And, now the back of the quilt...Cut new batting and basted it into the holes where batting was missing.

Figured out what to do to cover the holes on the back (I had no more of the backing fabric). I decided to add a leaf.

Here is final picture of the back of the quilt.

It is going back to Hunter this next week, and I am happy with the results.

Design Wall Monday - November 5, 2018

November already!  October is in the rear view mirror, and Thanksgiving is ahead!

I hope you all had fun on Halloween.  For those with little ones, who celebrate Trick or Treating, I hope you had fun handing out candy and helping them eat candy.  I didn't even buy any candy because kids don't come to our door on Halloween, and I end up eating all the candy.   We are near the end of a cul-de-sac in a subdivision where the homes are far apart, so the children knock on doors in greener pastures.

Here is a picture of four Halloween pillows on the couch in the living room:

I made the orange pumpkin head pillow, and bought the other three.  I copied the black kitty pillow's smile on my pumpkin pillow.  The ghosts that I call "Kasper and The Mrs. Kasper" were from the Hallmark store years ago, and are very soft fabric and light weight.  I have to make sure that our labrador retriever, Penny Lane, doesn't decide that they are dog toys.  She seems to think everything on earth is for her pleasure.  LOL

The main fall season quilt that I get out each year is called, appropriately "Third Weekend in October", pattern by Ruth Powers:

I know I have blogged about it before.  It is a large quilt that is 85 X 110 inches.  I leave it out until after Thanksgiving and enjoy it every year.  All paper pieced, and I would never do it again, but I did it with a friend who was making her version also, so we cheered each other on.  I am not fond of paper piecing, as I have trouble visualizing where to put the fabric before sewing the pieces.

It is also the only large quilt that I have ever free motion quilted.  I don't even remember how I did it, but at the time, I was in the groove, and quilted "veins" in each leaf, on my domestic machine.

This week we are visiting our daughter and her family in Texas, so I wrote this post before I left town, and scheduled it to post on the morning of November 5th.  I will arrive back home on the evening of November 5th, and I look forward to viewing all of your lovely design walls then.  Thank you everyone who links up with Design Wall Monday.
