Design Wall Monday - September 16, 2024

Good Morning Quilters!

This week has been semi-productive, so I haven't much to show you.  Plenty to tell you though.  

Remember back in the spring, when I showed you the start of a first quilt a friend of mine worked on while at my house?  I blogged about Elise (Here)  She has since moved from Grand Rapids to Muskegon, and I haven't seen her for a while.  But here is the picture and text that I received from Elise today: 

    "Finally done! Finished the binding by hand last night.  Wanted to say thank you so, so much for all the help and all the tools to get me started!  I'm hooked!"

I am so pleased that she's 'hooked'.  Here is her finished quilt, made for her daughter's bed:

Also this week, Joan Brink's beautiful quilt that I blogged about (Here) won another award at another quilt show.  Best Traditional Quilt in the AQS Lancaster, PA quilt show!  I am so happy for her.  Another picture of her quilt:

One friend, in the group that I go to Shipshewana with, had an email request for a contribution of two blocks for a Quilt of Valor.  I followed the directions to make a red, white and blue 12 inch block........and made the block.  Then I measured it.  It was just exactly 12 inches square.......not 12.5 inches as it should be as an unfinished block.  Sooooo, I took it all apart and made it again, this time using a "scant"  1/4 inch seam, and it is now the correct size, 12.5 inches.    They asked for two blocks of the same fabric, so the second block is now made correctly,  and they are ready to take with me when the retreat happens in November.  

 Also, the baby quilt of last week's post is in the mail, and should arrive at the baby's house today.  All in all a good report week.

Design Wall Monday - September 2, 2024

 Good Morning Quilters!

Labor Day is celebrated in America to honor the workers who built America.  As quilters, our labors of love are to be celebrated too.  So Happy Labor Day to you!

While at the AQS Quilt Sow in Grand Rapids recently, I saw many beautiful quilts.  I thought I’d share another one with you today.  Karen Kay Buckley made this one:

 It won a second place ribbon.  I liked all the colors used and the overall design.  Here are some closeup pictures to show you the quilting in the darker border that was wonderful:

Design Wall Monday - August 26, 2024

Good Morning Quilters!

Today I am going to brag about a good friend, Joan Brink, who just won one of the big prizes at the 2024 AQS Grand Rapids Quilt Show.

Joan appliquéd this beautiful Baltimore Album quilt.  I am so happy for her and that her quilt got recognized.  She did such a beautiful job and as you can see, it was a lot if work.  

 

My progress has been minimal this week, but I did take some pictures of some other quilts at the AQS show, which I will show you next Monday.

DesignWall Monday - September 18, 2023

Good Morning Quilters!

The AQS Quilt Show was last week in Grand Rapids.  I entered my Cheddar Baskets quilt and here is a picture if me beside my quilt.  Sue Daurio’s machine quilting made it special and I thought others would enjoy seeing’s it.

 

My favorite part of the quilt show was a special exhibit if vintage quilts.  It was a quilt collection of Sue Reich, representing 150 years of Quilting Blues, ranging from 1825 to 1976.

Design Wall Monday - August 29, 2022

Good Morning Quilters!

As I’ve said before, one of my life goals is to stay “whelmed”…….not underwhelmed and not overwhelmed.  Last week, I was feeling overwhelmed, and so I have no pictures of my design wall.   I did take a baby quilt to a baby shower, and here is a picture of the final binding progress on it (bound the day before the shower):

Instead, I have more pictures from the AQS Quilt Show held in Grand Rapids, MI recently.  These are just three of the many, many beautiful quilts that caught my eye.

And who thinks of doing a picture of a dog using only circles?  Notice the quilting is circles too!

I liked the bright cheerful colors of the fabrics here (I have none of this in my stash):

Design Wall Monday - August 22, 2022

 Good Morning Quilters!

I went to the AQS Quilt Show in downtown Grand Rapids on Thursday.  Such beautiful quilts, with amazing workmanship.  I’d like to talk about just one of the quilts that I saw.  It is named “Monkeys in My Hair (Evie)” and is by Deborah Hyde.

This quilt won “Best Wall Quilt” in this show, and has won several awards in other shows too.  I read more on the internet about Deb Hyde when I got back home, and thought you’d like to learn more too.

She has a technique of using one inch squares of fabric to create her incredible portraits.  She is on Facebook as “Deb Hyde Fiber Art”, and there are more pictures and information there.

There are so many small birds, insects, and yes, two monkeys in her hair.  All made from small squares of fabric. She was featured in the May 2022 issue of American Quilter.

    

To achieve the images using her one inch square method, she had to cut an image from fabric several times, because the seams take up part of the image. Here is a preliminary stage before a monkey is sewn together.

Amazing work, and such talent.  I am so thankful I got to see her work, and all the other beautiful quilts.  I am amazed by the talented quilters that enter quilt shows.

Design Wall Monday - September 23, 2019

Good Monday Quilters!  I wanted to show you another hand pieced, hand quilted beauty from the special exhibit that was at the AQS QuiltWeek in Grand Rapids recently.  This one made me stop and think about why I fuss about the colors I choose.  Look at this beautiful quilt:

It is so brightly colored and I was amazed that I liked all of it - together!  Bright red cornerstones, purple sashing, pink blocks, orange blocks, maroon blocks, anything goes:

Design Wall Monday, September 9, 2019

Yikes, I forgot to post my Monday AM post last night.  I usually write it before I go to bed.  But please forgive me, I'm old.  (I used to do things like this when I was young too, but now I feel I have an excuse).  lol

So, since I'm not at my design wall, let me show you a quilt I liked from the recent Grand Rapids AQS exhibit.  There was a group of quilts off to one side that were entirely hand pieced and hand quilted......my favorites!

This was an Ocean Waves quilt with great colors:

I loved the pinwheel centers, the hourglass setting squares, and the touch of cheddar that added so much to the quilt.  Here's the full quilt:

I had to study it for a bit to decide if the cheddar was random, or placed in a certain spot....and saw that there was a "pattern" to the cheddar placement.

It is always the middle triangle of the hst strip that is towards the light part of the hourglass block.  It is such a beautiful quilt.  Two more pictures:

What are working on this week?  I am back in Grand Rapids, and am organizing the small/doll quilts again.  I have a goal of having a label and hanging triangles on each one, and there is a pile of them waiting for me to get that done.

Design Wall Monday - August 21, 2017

I did get some quality quilt viewing time in last week, as I spent part of the week in Grand Rapids with my best friend Dee, and we attended the AQS Quilt Show on Thursday. 

Here are pictures of two quilts, of the many, that I liked from the show:

Isn't this beautiful?  It is a whole different kind of quilting than I could ever do, so I just sit back and admire it.  Following is a close-up of part of the flower:

My hat's off to Andrea Brokenshire!  Such wonderful work......but no ribbon!  I appreciated it and hope you all do too.   I wonder why it didn't get a ribbon.

Another quilt that I liked because I love thirties and anything plaid:

Each basket was plaid, and I thought the outside border was a great selection to tie it all together.  The quilting was great too.....a lovely quilt, but again, no ribbon.   Here is a picture of the whole quilt:

I'll close with a picture of my friend Dee who was visiting me.  She doesn't like to have her picture taken, but isn't she cute? 

We were at the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, and if you are ever in Grand Rapids, it is a beautiful place to visit.
