Design Wall Monday - September 2, 2019

September is here, and in the United States, it is Labor Day, a national holiday.  I have taken a holiday from quilting this week, and have no progress to show you on my quilts.  So here is a doll quilt that will be in keeping with my subject today.  Butterflies!

This butterfly doll quilt is 10.5 in. by 11.5 in, and was a gift to me in 2003, by my friend Dee.

The butterflies are machine blanket stitched down.

I'll post about the beautiful "Monarch nursery" we have here.  The milkweed plants are just off the front porch, where the caterpillars eat until they are fat.
Then then crawl up on the porch and form a chrysalysis which hangs from the ceiling.  We have 8 monarch chrysalises still hanging there, and 5 empty ones where the Monarch butterflies have emerged and flown away.  Here is one who has just emerged after his wonderous transformation:

What is on your design wall this week?  I'm looking forward to reading your posts and seeing your pictures.  Please put a link within your post that links back to this particular blog post.

Love the little butterfly quilt, so cute! I had many monarch caterpillars on the butterfly weed before I went to PA several weeks ago. I checked when I got home, the plant is pretty well stripped of leaves but no sign of any chrysalis. See you in a couple months, happy stitching!

We are just starting to see the Monarchs who have started their migration to the south for the winter. Love the quilt and the butterfly shot.

How cool that you have so many Monarchs in your butterfly nursery. I have a stand of milkweed and have seen a few Monarchs flit around this summer, but no caterpillars or any evidence that they were chomping on the leaves.

One never knows where they will form their chrysalis. We had some this Spring hanging off the backs of chairs on our deck, hiding in chrysanthemum plants by the deck and under the top deck railing. We got to see several emerge mostly by dumb luck!

Adorable butterfly quilt, so tiny and sweet! The butterfly nursery at your house sounds fun to watch. The monarchs migrate up and down our California coast but have been fewer the last few years with all the huge fires that have happened. Hope to see more in January/February next year.

I love a good doll quilt. I've been making either doll quilts or taggie blankets with the scraps from the baby quilts I've made lately. They make such a nice addition to the quilt as a gift.
