Design Wall Monday - January 9, 2023

 Good Morning Quilters!

This week I pulled out an old UFO to see what was needed to finish it up.  I found out….….not much!  The blocks were all assembled, sewn into rows and over half of the rows sewn together.  There are only three more long seams to sew and the quilt center will be complete.  Why did I stop?

The blocks were made by following Barbara Brackman’s blog  (back in 2012)  about the women’s suffrage movement.  The blog is  (here) but not very active now.

America’s primary suffrage color was gold, often contrasted with black, so that is what I used.   I thought it would make a nice autumn quilt.   Here is the UFO on the design wall right now:

The blocks finish at 8 inches square.  Two blocks that gave me trouble at the time:

The mystery here is that there was a bag with about 350 two inch finished size hsts packed with it.  All the half square triangles are gold solids or prints with black solids or prints.  I don’t know what my original intent was for the hsts.   I could use some of them for a border, and some of them for a small quilt.  Note to self:  leave better notes with my UFOs in the future.  What should I do with them?

I am almost finished with another Benjamin Biggs Wedding Quilt block.  These patterns were free on the internet for a short time from Gay Bomers at her Sentimental Stitches website. Her website now is (Here)   I must have missed copying the pattern for this block, but I have patterns for all of the other blocks.  For this one, I drafted my own pattern.  It will be fine.  I’m not sure what flowers these are supposed to be, but here’s my version of the original quilt block:

My next block for this quilt is the center block, and has a lot more going on in it.  I hope to start it today.

What are you working on this week?   I am excited to look at all the pictures and read all of your blog posts. The new year is a great time to renew our resolve to get our hobby in tip top shape.  Thank you for your participation.  Click on the link below to join our Design Wall Monday Linky Party.  I appreciate you.

I would think those HST's are for an outer border. We always think we're going to remember what our intent was but we forget, you're right, make better notes! Ben Biggs is coming along, he's so pretty, happy stitching!

Oh my I feel the frustration of not having left good notes on the UFO, been there done that last week in fact! Why oh why do we do this to ourselves. Would you have blogged about this quilt back then and mentioned there what you intended?

That gold and black quilt is stunning! And it's a good reminder to all of us quilters to leave better notes with projects we set aside. I don't always do that either.

The black and gold sampler glows! And how wonderful to re-discover it with so much of it finished. The HSTs would be a fine border. Your Biggs blocks are coming along nicely.

I made those blocks and loved that project! Seeing your photos brought back happy memories!
I don't have good notes with my UFOs usually because I was not intending for them to slip away into the UFO closet LOL!

I like the hourglass setting that you chose for the blocks. It's a cool looking quilt. I started that quilt along. Made 4 blocks and stopped because template quilting and I just don't get along. Of the 4, I don't think one of them worked out well. It's still on my UFO list. At some point I need to decide to salvage it or just start over.

I used to follow Barbara Brackman also. I guess life gets in the way of all of us sooner or later. I love the quilt and know you will find a creative way to use those HSTs. I have pulled out UFOs without good notes before and made the same resolution.

The women’s suffrage quilt is amazing! I’m so glad you pulled it out again.

I wonder what you were thinking to stop work on a quilt almost done. Unless you needed to make a lot more hst and were tired of it. I've tried to write good notes when I quit working on a project. Sometimes I actually DO leave good notes but not as often as I should. Enjoy your week.

So striking! I rarely make two color quilts as I find it dull to only have two fabrics, but they are very interesting all together!
"Notes to self" is one of my goals for the endless baggies and grouping of fabric leftovers I make in my sewing room! I do have a whole scrapbooking drawer full of leftover blocks and those are fun to play with.

I think the quilt - which is quite lovely and striking in those colors - needs a border and the HST’s might work well.

Judy, your suffrage quilt is looking amazing. Great tip on leaving notes for unfinished products. I sometimes find myself in the same predicament. Have a great week and thank you for hosting the link party

Amazing quilt, glad you are finishing it, it's a beauty. I went through some notes the other day, some of them I have no clue what it was about. I have to be better on good notes! Currently working on a RSC UFO.

Beautiful quilt! I’m guessing those hst’s are for your border?

Hi Judy, how cool to see someone else working on that quilt! It's one of my UFOs. I've got most of the blocks that I wanted to make but haven't put it together because I want place them around a medallion. I have an idea of what I want to do, but haven't visited it in years...maybe it's time? Your quilt looks great. Good luck with using up those HSTs.
