Design Wall Monday - November 17, 2025

Good Morning Quilters!

Thanks for your input on the two log cabin quilts binding selection.  It was unanimously decided on the red print binding choice.  I have sewed it to the quilts and am taking them with me to a quilt retreat.  I plan to hand sew the bindings to the backs as I visit with friends there.

I wanted to use the same red print fabric on both the bed sized quilt and the matching doll quilt.  I cut all I had into 2 1/4 inch strips and joined them together.  After the big quilt binding was sewn on, I realized I didn’t have enough binding for the little quilt unless I cut the leftover strip down the middle, and used it as “single-fold” binding.  As it is a doll quilt, it won’t get the wear and usage of a big quilt, so the single fold binding will be just fine.  Have you ever used single-fold binding?

I also bought some fake fur and finished the project of a Christmas stocking for my friend Lisa’s granddaughter.   The fake fur cuff finishes it off nicely.

Today I will gather my things together for the coming retreat.  I am so looking forward to this retreat.  I know I will get my quilting mojo back while I am in the presence of such great quilters.  

The greatest news that happened this week is that one of our grandson’s is now engaged.  We are so happy for the newly engaged couple!  We have eight grandchildren, ages 23 through 28, and only one is married.

Design Wall Monday - November 10, 2025

Good Morning Quilters!

My Christmas stocking project for my friend Lisa’s grandbaby is almost finished.  I am going to buy some fake white “fur” for a cuff and then it will be finished.  I sewed the baby clothes pieces together, quilted it, sewed front and back together, made a white lining, put a sleigh bell in between the lining and the stocking (so the stocking will have a little jingle sound when it is picked up).  Here is a picture of the project so far:

Front:  (the lining is folded over the front a little bit - I will cut it off even with the stocking before I add the fur)

I have two quilts back from the longarm quilter that need binding.  Since I am still in a funky no-quilting mojo mood, I can’t decide what color fabric to use to bind them.

What do you think?

Here are the log cabin quilts, the bed sized one, and the doll quilt that matches it….and two possible binding fabrics……or I could use something else.  I’m open to suggestions.

I could also use navy binding, but I’m kinda tired of navy, as I use it so often.  But I could if you think it would be best.  Thanks for giving me your opinions.

Design Wall Monday - June 23, 2025

 Good Morning Quilters!

Today I am having cataract surgery on my left eye, as scheduled.  The right eye surgery went well two weeks ago, so please pray that today’s procedure goes well too.  

The design wall has been actively used this week.  I finished the last of the appliquéd flowers on the border of The Cousin’s Walk quilt, and put it up there to take a picture of it.  This quilt is too big for my design wall!  Here are pictures taken this week before I send it to a long arm quilter:

This is such a happy quilt,  I am looking forward to seeing what the machine quilter adds to it.  

The log cabin quilt has been sewed into rows and six rows are together, with five more rows to be added.  I decided to not add any border to it.  Thanks for your input.  Here it is on the ironing board:  

The small log cabin doll quilt has also been sewed into six rows and is back on the design wall.

Also on the design wall are rows G through M of the shirting/indigo Jane Stickle quilt.  It will stay on the design wall until I fill in the blocks that need to be made to fill the blank spots.  Each block is a fun little challenge.  Here is a current picture of the design wall:

So lots going on here, and hopefully my recovery time will be spent making Jane Stickle quilt blocks in the coming weeks.

Design Wall Monday - June 16, 2025

 Good Morning Quilters!

Yesterday was Father’s Day, and also our wedding anniversary.  We have been married 62 years!  It seems impossible, but there it is.  June 15, 1963……..to June 15, 2025…….and as in the story books, we have lived happily ever after.  I am so blessed.

Quiltwise, I have had another productive week.  First, the Cousin’s Walk appliqué quilt was worked on again, and I made progress on finishing up one of the border corners.  Here is a picture of my progress…..a yellow flower to sew down, and another leaf to add on the opposite side of the vine, and this part will be finished.  There is one more border corner to work on.  

Re the design wall, I finished the first six rows of the Indigo/Shirting Jane Stickle blocks, and took them off the wall.  I am excited to get the final seven rows up there to see what blocks I am missing.  Here the six rows are before I put them away.

But the log cabin blocks were stacked on the floor, staring at me.  So, I put the log cabin blocks up, and here is a picture of the design wall now:

The block arrangement is called Barn Raising, and I found I needed two more blocks to finish the plan.  So I made them, and am now sewing the blocks together into a quilt top.  The blocks finish at 7.5 inches square, with the logs at 3/4 inch wide.  Do you like a border around a log cabin quilt or not?  I haven’t decided yet.

The little doll quilt (half the size of these blocks) has been moved to the “design floor” area near the design wall.  It will be assembled next.  So it was a good week, and I am happy.

Design Wall Monday - June 9, 2025

 Good Morning Quilters!

Today I am having cataract surgery on my right eye.  Please pray that it goes well, and that my eyes will be well again soon so I can continue quilting.  The surgeon said I should be able to see colors more clearly after surgery, so that should be a good quilting thing!  If all goes well, the left eye will be done two weeks from now.

Progress has been made on my two UFOs up on the design wall.  I made the remaining four blocks for the log cabin doll quilt.  Next, it will be sewn together into a top.  The blocks finish at 3 and 3/4 inches square with the little “logs” finishing at 3/8 inch each.  The doll quilt should measure 22.5 inches square before I bind it.  It was fun to make.

The large log cabin blocks (over 100 of them) will go up on the design wall soon.  The larger log cabin blocks will finish at 7.5 inches square.

The Jane Stickle indigo and shirting quilt squares are coming along nicely.  It is true that seeing it on the design wall makes me want to finish squares to fill the holes.  I next need to make five more blocks so that the row A through F are complete.  Each little 4.5 inches square block is a challenge to make and I enjoy filling up the holes in each row.  When the next five blocks are made, I will take this half down and put the rows G through M up on the design wall.  Here is a picture of what the design wall looks like today:

Design Wall Monday - June 2, 2025

Good Morning Quilters!

June is here and my quilt mojo is back, so I’ve been very productive.  The log cabin blocks have multiplied to more than 100 blocks.  These blocks will finish at 7.5 inches square.

They are awaiting their time on the design wall.  There is no room because the design wall has my indigo and shirting Jane Stickle quilt blocks on it - at least the first six rows:

I have made at least five blocks since I last took a photo, and having it on the design wall is motivating me to fill in the gaps.  Three rows are now complete.  I could even start sashing them.

The doll quilt log cabin blocks (that finish at 3 and 3/4 inch square) are almost completed.  I need only four more blocks, and that won’t take long.

So I am feeling very productive once again.  But it is all part of the ebb and flow of life, isn’t it?  Some weeks are filled with other parts of life, and some weeks are filled with quilting.  Life is good, either way.

Design Wall Monday - May 19, 2025

Good Morning Quilters!

This past week, I worked more on appliqué leaves and flowers for the Cousin’s Walk quilts.  I have one end of two of the borders yet to do, and am feeling the surge to finish it.  So glad that I am working on it again.

Here are the ends of two borders that are now finished:

The second project ongoing is the UFO of Log Cabin.blocks.  I made 10 more blocks that will finish at 7.5 inches square.  While sewing them, I wondered what little blocks would look like.  You know I like to make little blocks.  

So, dividing the measurements in half, resulted in little blocks that finish at 3 3/4 inches square.  Here are two blocks side by side:

I had fun making them, and have started the next 10 blocks in each side.  There is something soothing about adding strips to a block on the sewing machine.  And batching them in tens makes the completion count go faster.

Design Wall Monday - May 12, 2025

 Happy Mother’s Day to you!

Last week I got out my UFO log cabin quilt blocks.  I looked back on my blog posts and the last time I had this project out was February, 2021.

But last week, the simplicity of adding strips of dark and light fabric around a center red square was just what I needed.  Here is a picture of the 200 center squares that were the start of this project many years ago:

I had only about 16 blocks (that will finish at 7.5” square) before this week, and made some good progress on 10 more blocks.  Here is a picture of the 10 blocks partially finished:  

 

When complete, there are four lights or four darks around the center.  I hope to get these 10 blocks completed this week.  It is fun to use so many different fabrics in a quilt, and I am once again having fun quilting.

Design Wall Monday - March 1, 2021

 Good Morning Quilters! 

March 1st, a new month, and I have been working on the two quilts on my design wall.  Plus other projects as well.  I think March will be a good month of progress on the UFOs.  Here is the design wall: 

Still lots of brown and white, but the Wedding Ring quilt has all the edge triangles now cut, and the rows are getting assembled.  I can see the finish line, which will spur me on.

The Drunkard's Path is moving along nicely too.  I sew a few concave/convex pieces each day:

And when I have enough; sew them into a larger block:

All the convex and concave block pieces are cut and stored in baggies, each holding enough pieces to make the block above.  I think there are about 15 baggies yet to put together.  I am getting better at the curves, that is for sure.  It is slow....take 3-4 stitches with needle down when I stop.....then adjust the fabric, take 3-4 more stitches....repeat.  I think it was named by the person who drank a whole lot while she was sewing this quilt pattern.  

The log cabin quilt has one more block, and I am loving working on it.  (The shiny new project).   Here are the blocks now:

Design Wall Monday - February 25, 2021

Update:  Oops, I put the 25th in the title when I wrote this late last night.  It is the 22nd, but I’ll leave the title alone as some have already linked to it.   Maybe I am in a hurry to get to spring.

Good Morning Quilters!

I felt like I made progress this week.  Here is another finished May Day Basket block:

I have another one ready to start, and shall work on it this afternoon.  I also made more Drunkards Path squares, enough for another block, and worked on sewing together some of the rows of the brown and white Wedding Ring quilt that was on the design wall.  No picture of the design wall as it looks as brown and white as it did last week.  lol 

The UFOs got restudied again, and I put some of them in the sewing room closet.  So now all the batting, backings, projects, etc. have been looked at, sorted, organized, and have a home.  They are either in the shelving in the basement, or in the sewing room closet.  I was surprised at how many small quilts I have that just need quilting and binding.  I may have a small quilt/doll quilt week soon, and get them finished.

One of the projects I started to put away called me to work on it.  It's a log cabin quilt.  Now, I live in a log cabin all summer.....you would think that I would have made a log cabin quilt!  But I have not.  What I had was a large box of scrap strips and some notes and two blocks made.  So this past week, I've had fun putting more blocks together.  I now have eight blocks, and here is a picture.  It looks like I was sewing dark strips where light ones should be on the center block, but it's all good.  I think about anything goes in a scrappy log cabin quilt.

So the log cabin project got sorted into two smaller bins of darks and one bin of lights.  For the present time, all three small bins are under the ironing board, right near my machine to remind me to make a block or two whenever they call me.  And making these blocks helps break up the brown and white sewing I've been doing lately.

March is coming soon, and then April.....and you know what happens in April? Spring!!!  March is usually a good quilting month for me, so I am enthused again to get more things finished.  How about you?
