Design Wall Monday - October 24, 2022

 Good Morning Quilters!

My post will be non-quilty today because we are traveling.  We saw our youngest Granddaughter twirl her baton during the halftime show of the Texas Tech University football game Saturdfay.  Lubbock, TX is a beautiful town and the weather was perfect.  

In the car on the way I did some crocheting for my daughter’s Etsy store.  It is a poncho for a little girl, and I am on the last round.

At our destination, the home team won on Homecoming weekend!   Sophie and the other twirlers twirled fire lit batons at the Pep Rally Friday night.  Scary and amazing.

The “gun” hand signal is Texas Techs’  “Guns Up” done by every fan in the stadium to cheer on the Red Raiders.  Lots of cheering enthusiastic fans.  Much fun was had by all.

Design Wall Monday - August 8, 2022

Good Morning Quilters!  

I hear it takes a long time to finish quilts you are not working on. 😊

Well, that is my situation this week!  We had a super time with kids and grandkids all last week, and we created even more "last" great memories at the cabin.

This week is packing up things, giving things away to family, friends, and charities.  It is all good.  We will turn the cabin over to the new owners on Wednesday, and I shall return to my quilting life.  This week has been very full and I am so happy that it has gone so well.

This is how fast I've been moving this week - but no quilting to show for it!

Design Wall Monday - July 8, 2019

Did you have a nice 4th of July week?  I sure did.....however, I had so much fun and company that I didn't get any quilting done.  It made me happy to spend time with family, and we had a great time.  Here are two pictures I took this week, neither one is of quilting, but I hope you enjoy them:

The first is a vase of roses.  My nephew Doug cut some of his roses for me from a prolific bush in his backyard.  And the vase is one of my Mother's, and always reminds me of her.

The second is a flat of strawberries that we picked on Saturday.  I was starting to prepare them for shortcake when I stopped, and said I must take a picture of these beautiful berries.  With six of us, it didn't take us very long to pick these, and we had delicious strawberry shortcake that night.  Yummy!

We also had a bonfire later Saturday night (with s'mores) and watched the fireworks.  The lake association put on a fine show out over the lake.  It was a lovely holiday and I feel like I shouldn't eat again for a week!

Design Wall Monday - November 12, 2018

Today is Veterans Day in the United States.  There are, according to the History Channel, 16.5 million living veterans who have served in at least one war, and 5.2 million living veterans who have served in times of peace.  Thank you to all of our veterans for your service and sacrifice. 

While visiting our daughter last week, I made replacement oven mitts for some I made for her a few years ago.  I made a bunch of these for Christmas presents back then, and our daughter was my "tester"  for size and padding advice.  Here are the the old ones, which were well worn:

She is an expert zippered bag maker, and I am afraid of zippers.  Soooo, she helped me make a zippered bag, and showed me several tutorials on the Internet that I can follow to make more of them.  I am now slightly less afraid of zippers, thanks to my dear daughter.  Thank you Christa!  This little "doggy" bag will stay in the car with treats for our dog, so I will not forget to have rewards for Penny on car trips.  I think it is so cute!!! and I put the zipper in by myself!!!

When I returned home, I worked on finishing a little nine patch doll quilt that I had asked you for opinions on a few weeks ago. (in this post)  Most of you liked the on point setting, and the cheddar print for sashing or alternate block.    But I couldn't ever decide on what I wanted for cornerstones, so I tried a different sashing that didn't require cornerstones.  However, I found it does involve many partial seams, and I would like to find an easier way to do this "basket weave" sashing look.   Maybe pressing the sashing edges under, and weaving it first and then sew it to the nine patches by hand.  Anyone tried it, and have any tips?

It measures 12.25 inches square and the nine patches are 1.5 inches finished size.  Sophia Grace and Rosie are very pleased with it.

I do like how it looks, and have bound it without quilting it, as I am not sure what color thread to quilt it with, and where to put the quilting.  Maybe I will leave it without quilting, as it is a small doll quilt.  Too many decisions for my brain this week.

I cut the bias binding at one inch wide, not thinking about what I was doing.  I had planned to only single fold it, but still, one inch is too narrow.  I made a note to myself to use only down to 1.25 inch single fold binding in the future, as my limit to smallness in doll quilt bindings.  Here's a closeup of the binding:

Design Wall Monday - September 10, 2018

Well not quilting, but I did do some hand work this week.  I've been knitting Christmas stockings for my son's family and I'm almost finished with the final four.  I have to add hanging loops at the top, and line the stockings with muslin, add some buttons to the gingerbread man, and then I will have this project finished!  It will be good to get back to quilting again.

We've had heavy rainstorms, lightening, and thunder up at the cabin.  I took three pictures of different parts of the same tree in our woods, where lightening struck the tree.  There is a six to eight inch strip of bark missing where the jolt went down the trunk to the bottom.  Such power!

Design Wall Monday - August 27, 2018

Well, we have been without power since 11:00 last night, and now have power at 2:00 PM, Monday afternoon.   So sorry for the late posting of Design Wall Monday.  No power.....no blog post happens.


I will get right to it, and get this post up and running.  What have you been working on this week?  I am looking forward to seeing pictures, please.  The rules are the same, just link somewhere within your blog post back to this particular blog post of mine, and everything will work fine.

What's Happening Here - Non-Quilty Things

Some of you know that we moved to Michigan from Virginia to help care for some family members.  This past week was a week of helping family, and was a very busy week.  Not much quilting got done, but much was accomplished.  

We helped a nephew find homes for two dogs that he could no longer take care of, and that was very rewarding.   We had prayed for God to provide good homes for each dog, where they would be loved and cared for, and everything fell into place for both dogs.  In the same day!  God is so good!
  
Another surprising event was on Monday night:

I had been on the road that day for 7 hours total, taking care of some legal issues with a nephew, and was very tired when I returned home.  Hubby knew that, and when I arrived back home, I told him I was going to take a quick one hour nap before fixing dinner.  When I woke up, the house smelled so good, that I walked out into the kitchen to find......a casserole!!

I wondered which of my kind neighbors had dropped it off while I was asleep, and hubby informed me that HE HAD MADE IT!!  We have been married for 52 years, and never does he cook!  I mean he grills outside, but the kitchen is not his domain.

Here is the proof:

It was a wonderful surprise, and just made me love him even more, as he knew how tired I was.  He said he didn't have any recipe.....he just made it up!

So here is Lloyd Hansen's "Welcome Home Honey" casserole:  

Mix together in a glass 9 x 12 casserole dish:

2 lengths of Kielbasa (Polish sausage) sliced
5 strips of bacon, cut into pieces (cooked first) 
5 medium potatoes sliced (he left the skins on)
1 large onion, chopped
1 can mushroom soup
4 soup cans of water

Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top, generously

Bake in the oven for about an hour at 350 degrees.

There will be quilty things posted about next week, but this was too good a serendipity to keep to myself.
