Design Wall Monday - May 27, 2024

Good Morning Quilters!

Today is Memorial Day (which was called Decoration Day years ago.) 

I remember when I was a child my brother and I would decorate our bicycles with red, white and blue crepe paper and ride in the parade that ended at the town cemetery.  The ceremony at the cemetery, included speeches, prayers, taps, and a 21 gun salute.  My father wore his WWII uniform, and would be proud that it still fit.  I would guess this memory was from the mid 1950s, as I was 10 years old in 1953.

What quilt or quilts do you display on Memorial Day?  I have lots on red, white and blue quilts, as I love our country so much.  Red, white and blue make a great quilt color combination.

Design Wall Monday - February 21, 2022

 Good Morning Quilters!  This past week has been bitter sweet here, as my only sister passed away on Wednesday.  She went peacefully as I held her hand, and I was so honored to care for her during her final days here on earth.  I am sure she is in heaven, enjoying a new life there.  Her funeral is tomorrow, and quilting will again take a back seat for another week.  Thank you all for your prayers for her and for our family.  

The only thing “quilt” related this week was a purchase:  I bought some blue buttons from a friend who is downsizing her sewing room.  I have wanted to make an American Flag Quilt and have saved some internet examples of different ideas.  See below:

Now that I have my friend’s buttons, I am thinking about this idea more.  Have you made a wall hanging using buttons on a quilt?

The quilt in my blog header is made with buttons from my mother’s button box, and is one of my favorites.  I think it is time to sew some more buttons onto a quilt.

Design Wall Monday - May 3, 2021

 May Basket Quilt - an update for you for the first week of May.  Here are the latest two completed blocks:

There are 30 basket blocks in the quilt, and these two are #23 and #24.  So I’m down to the last six, and it is fun to be on the home stretch.

And here’s where the flag quilt “10 Cents A Chance”, is right now.  There are 288 appliquéd stars, so I decided to make one flag, 48 stars, and then decide if I want to make the whole quilt.   To start, I took freezer paper out and cut a piece the size of the blue star field.  I then sectioned it into smaller sections, and traced the star pattern onto it.  I decided to think about the project as four sections with 12 stars in each.  I am now starting to appliqué  stars, and yesterday, I appliquéd three stars.  At this rate, I could do 12 stars each week, and finish the first flag this month.
